TIPS FOR USING A PLANER

With some super handy and diverse functions such as edge-smoothing, levelling out reclaimed timber and chamfering handrails and posts, the planer is a time saver which is a great additional to any tool collection.

SAFETY TIPS

As with all power equipment, make sure you wear adequate protective clothing – for a planer that’s eyewear and ear protection.

It’s always a smart idea to clamp the materials down before operating the tools to ensure both of your hands are free to control the tool at a safe and steady pace. After turning the tool off, protect yourself and your workpiece by waiting for the blade to stop spinning before you place the tool down on your workbench.

USING THE PLANER

Start by resting the planer’s front shoe flat on the timber piece without allowing the blade to contact your workpiece. Start the planer and let the engine reach maximum speed, then ease the planer into touch with the workpiece and drive it forward slowly – letting the planer blades do the work. Apply greater pressure on the rear handle when you lift the planer off the timber workpiece. This will reduce the possibility of creating gouges at the end of a pass.
